I went to the market today! Finally. It was AMAZING. I bought:
- broccoli
- onion
- garlic
- mushrooms
- carrots
- strawberries
all for under ten dollars, I think. The strawberries were the most expensive, I think, at $3.50. but I remember the broccoli, carrots, and onion all together were $1.80. WHOA that is cheap. It was awesome. I looked at some other things, like meat and fish and cheese, and I think I might have a harder time buying that sort of stuff because I am not quite sure what to look for, other than the words “bacon” and “half off”. Those I can deal with. But really, all those vegetables for that little? I can get used to this. And if I usually just make meals for myself, they will last me a long time. I think I’ll make dinner tonight. :)
also, I got these wonderful little pastries called… “bureks”… I think (?) for lunch but they ended up being really filling, so I will have to eat the one and a half left tonight sometime. They come filled with spinach and cheese, or just cheese, or beef and onion. Mmm delicious! They also have dessert flavors. I think they were Greek, or maybe Turkish. Haha I really don’t know. They have a lot of different kind of foods at the market. I also got one of the famous donuts they sell at the market. They are Spanish donuts, really crisp and lightly sugared with a little jelly filling. And only a dollar! They were SO good. Yum yum yum.
So I did all my shopping before two pm, because that’s when the market closes on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Then I came back to my room, dropped my groceries off, and then walked down to Lygon Street. It really is so close. It’s very nice too. I think it’s the nicest part of the city I have been in so far. And I stopped at a little cafĂ© for a tiny latte and discovered they have free wifi!!! Yaaaaay! And they are only a block away. Much closer than McDonald’s, and way less weird to hang out on your computer in. in McDonald’s it doesn’t feel right. It’s a fast food place! You don’t hang out in a fast food place surfin the net. You hang out in a corner of a coffee shop or bookstore. So I was very glad to find that place. They close at 4:30 pm though.
I also found a video store a little further down called Carton Video Dogs, or something. It was kind of sketchy, but pretty cool. They have a good selection, only movies and tv that’s actually good. And I think it was relatively cheap. Some were $4.40 for a 3 day rental. They had Agatha Christie’s Poirot, the BBC show. I thought about renting that, because those are nice and long to watch. But then I realized I didn’t really have a card to open an account with yet. I think I could have used an American one, but it might not have worked, so I set out for my new Australian bank, Commonwealth, next.
I figured since I was out, I could just stop by and see if they had a bank card for me yet and if I could transfer money from my American accounts. I would really like to have a debit card to use, instead of taking out cash. I feel weird always having big bills with me. They call debit cards here “f-pass cards.” Weird. Like fast pass? I don’t get it. But anyway, I got to the bank at about 4:45, thinking they might be open till 5, but turns out banks here close at 4. Or at least Commonwealth does. Sighhh. Why does everything close so early? Australian people must like to be home by 5 at the latest here.
So today was a really, really good day. Just fun and easygoing, and I think it made me more comfortable with the city. I can interact with the locals a little more comfortably, and I always feel safe around this part of the city and around my apartment. Everyone is so kind and funny. I am finding that practically all the guys here are attractive, even if they aren’t that attractive haha. It must be the accent. But really, everyone is friendly and funny and makes me want to like them. Even the people on the streets asking you to sign petitions and things. I think I’m ready to fulfill my role as cute new American student living the life in Melbourne. Should be pretty easy. :)
So now I’m going to go make some dinner. Just noodles and veggies with soy sauce (I got soy sauce and olive oil at my handy convenience store downstairs). I don’t have saran wrap or dish soap, but I think I can deal. I probably won’t have leftovers… : / wish me luck!
My little bloggie about my time in Melbourne, Australia, for the months of July through November! Made for my lovely friends that I want to be in contact all the time but fear I will have trouble figuring out the time change and scheduling skype dates, etc. :)

I Bought Groceries!
Hooray! And I think I got some pretty good deals too. I looked for the specials, like on bread and butter and laundry detergent. So everything at the grocery store was about 35 dollars, I think. I mean, I didn’t get that much. I got bread, butter, salt, pasta sauce, pasta, salad dressing, lettuce, green onion, cheese, and laundry detergent. So if I cook tonight, I think I would have pasta with red sauce and salad. Not a bad dinner, if I do say so myself. I think I may attempt it.
Oh, but once I open the pasta sauce, will it keep? It says I can freeze it. Hmmm. Any adult, would you like to answer my question?
But I did get a total non-deal though. I went to Big W thinking they would have a cheap colander, and they only had a couple and they were both $15, so I thought, since this is at Big W, cheapest place I have found here, this must be the cheapest colander. So I bought it. But then when I got to the grocery store, I saw they had one for $8! What?? Big W, you have failed me. I even thought the grocery store colander was prettier and looked less heavy.
Note to self: always get a cart. Always. Those little carrying baskets are just not big enough for a medium sized grocery list. I should really get one of those wheely carts that the little old ladies around here put their groceries in. I was joking about them to someone, but now I think they are a very smart idea. I was dragging my super heavy reusable grocery bags all over the place. Oh, and the grocery store is right across the street from a Starbucks, so I wanted to in and test it out, see if it was like American Starbucks.
Well, the drinks were just the same, so that’s good, eh mom? :D but the place was soooooo big! And there were tons of people in there all hanging out and sipping their drinks. So it must be the place to go when you want to just sit and look hip with your coffee and spiky hair. It even had a little upstairs area. Really, it was huge compared to American Starbucks. Kind of like McDonald’s. And the cup sizes were the same as in the states, I think. I got a tall white mocha (my favorite!!) and it seemed about the same size. I was worried about that, because when you go anywhere else, they always give you a cute little cup. But it’s hard to tell how they translate, because everything is in mL here instead of oz.
Gosh, I am so glad I took the tram today. My bags were so heavy. I just got a 2 hour ticket, which seems to work out pretty well because it is only $3.70 and 2 hours is generally enough time for me to get everything done. I might be doing that more often. But today, on Swanston, one of the two busiest streets in the city, the trams were few and far between. I had to wait probably 7 minutes for the first one, but that was hugely crammed with people, and then another 7 minutes for the second one, which I just decided to take even though it was just as packed. You usually only have to wait about one or two minutes for a tram, and they are much less packed.
I got to talk to my mom and sister on skype today, yay! It was wonderful. I went to my orientation meeting at ten, then came back at about 10:30 to talk to them before my next meeting at 11:30. Skype is very nice, even when you just talk with no video. Because then it’s just like calling someone, only free! I turned my video on so they could see me for a little while, so I could show them my room (or was it just you that was on at that time, mom?) so that was fun.
Oh my gosh I almost forgot! I had a good flirtatious encounter with an Australian guy last night. Everyone from orientation went to Turf, a local bar, as like an event for this week, and there were Australian students there as well. I met one named James. He was pretty cute, brown hair, my height. Accent, of course. ;) He sort of reached out to me to get my attention, and then we talked about our majors. But I was just about to leave, I was looking for my new friend Philippa to see if she wanted to walk back because we were about to go. So I didn’t talk to him for very long. He was super flirty though, with his arm around me. When I went to go get my other friends and leave, he hugged me goodbye and went in for a kiss (!!!) and I just turned my head so he kissed my cheek. I don’t really kiss random guys. SOME PEOPLE *cough cough * think I should have just gone for it, since I’m in Australian, what’s there to lose, etc, etc, but I would rather know a person’s last name and/or phone number before I kiss them. Haha. Anyway, he seemed rather sad to see me leave. As a farewell he said, “Well, I guess I’ll say g’day!” and I was like “… so you guys say g’day even when it’s nighttime?” hahaha I’m such a card. But they really do say “g’day” at night… : /
Anyway, a very fun night overall. I also danced with this guy from Uruguay named Francisco, like really dancing, with spinning and my hand in his etc. That was HILARIOUS. He just approached me and took my hands and we started singing “Brown-eyed Girl” to each other. Haha it was awesome. I hope I meet that guy again.
Oh, and I tried Goon! Did I explain what that was yet? It’s extremely cheap boxed wine. Classy, I know. But lots of people drink it here, it seems. I guess because it’s cheap. It wasn’t that bad. Kind of sweet, which was strange. Oh and last night, Monika, Philippa, Morgan and I all watched this funny Australian drama tv show in Morgan’s room (her room came with a tv, how unfair is that?!?!) I didn’t even catch the name of it. But it was sort of from the eyes of this old man who, in this episode, got beat up by a bunch of high school girls. Hahahaha yes! That actually happened. And his elderly wife went to the hospital. And then the rest of the show was just him feeling emasculated and upset that there was no system where you could always check up on everyone and make sure they are okay. (I was like, “sir, there are things called cell phones.”) I guess the wine probably made it a little funnier, but I do believe it was pretty hilarious in the first place. Ahhh I really gotta start watching Australian tv shows.
Well, I’m going to go to RMIT village to have dinner with Morgan and Monika. I lied and said I didn’t have any food to contribute, because I kind of want to keep it to myself! Haha. I love everyone and miss everyone! Xoxoxoxo!

Yesterday's Post
Hello everybody!
I am currently in MY ROOM on THE INTERNET posting THIS BLOG. Amazing!!! So I bothered the internet guys some more and they finally gave me a temporary password to use until they figure out what's wrong with the other one. Hurray! I love life!
So today orientation started, which was cool I guess. I am so oriented-out though. I feel like I have had orientation nonstop since I got here.
I am also wondering if the internet plan I got is going to be enough. I think skype uses up a lit of Gbs, or something. I really don't know.
Today I plan on going to the market for some groceries, since the rain stopped (yay!) and figuring out a budget based on what I get today and what I have already bought, etc. And I need a latte. My brain is really fuzzy right now with my cold.
Anyway, here are the posts I made yesterday. Enjoy, mon petit ... ummm loved-ones!
July 19, 2010
…I only have two Tim Tams left… :(
I really want to eat one right now, but then I would only have one left…
I don’t care, I will go buy more.
Hopefully, by the end of the night, I will have internet in my room. As of now, 4:40 pm, I am writing into Word again. I went to McDonald’s this morning to get internet for a second to transfer money into the right account, so I did get to check facebook and my blog.
So I am making my room much more homey! I put away all my clothes. Wow, do I have a lot. Probably too many. I always pack too much. But now I have my empty suitcases under my bed, so it looks less like a hotel room I’m staying in temporarily. Oh, and I got a comforter and space heater today! Ahh, everything is so much warmer. The heater is actually very bright, like a light. It’s very warm when you get right up close to it, and sitting a few feet away it’s very nice. So if I ever come home with wet shoes, I will just set them in front of my new heater. :)
So I have a bit of a cold, you guys. :( It’s not that bad, just stuffy in my nose and my throat hurts a little. My stomach felt upset a little while ago, I’m not sure if that was related, but that went away. I’m a bit phlegm-y, I think that’s why my throat hurts. I don’t think this cold will last long, though.
I am so bad at meeting people. I’m okay at it when you are forced with people, like for the welcome program when you are sitting across from people you don’t know and need to introduce yourself, but not when you are passing a person in the hallway or on the elevator together. I tried saying hi to a girl I saw in the tv room just now, and she said hi back, just not in a warm way at all, with no smile. It seems like the people on my floor are already locked into friend groups, and no one is really all that interested in getting to know me. Oh, except for this guy from Maldives who let me and the internet guy take his computer to test the internet on it. He was nice. I don’t remember his name, though. Hope I see him again, at least. Just someone.
I mean, I’m American, and that’s interesting, right??? And I’m nice looking and friendly, right??? At least I try to be. Wouldn’t people want to know me? Sheesh. I gotta do all the work around here.
I feel like I’m only meeting international students, which is nice, and it’s nice to know other Americans I guess, but really. Let me meet some Australians already!
Tomorrow Orientation starts for international students. : /
More programming. Well, that’s what they call it at Oxy. “Programming.” It pretty much means organized events for students that you are kind of supposed to go to. I’m not sure if I like these kinds of events that much. It takes a lot out of me to keep introducing myself, and trying to remember names and where to go.
Well, I looked at the info from the website, which I luckily saved to a word document, and it seems I only have to go to the introduction meeting and an info session for the arts department, and that’s only until 12:30. Phew. Thank you, uni, for letting me keep settling in for a little longer.
Oh, I just got invited to a party for Avery’s birthday. Hmm that would be fun! I could see some of the people I know from the welcome. I got to know Avery a little bit better, and I find she’s not necessarily that nice. I was really glad to be with her the first day, but I don’t necessarily cherish our friendship, haha. But the girl who invited me, Tiffany, I really like. She and I walked around the zoo together. It was really fun. And she befriended me on facebook! Our friendship is legit! Haha. I think I’ll invite Monika and Olivia as well, if they don’t already know about it. It would be nice to be out of my room for a night.
Anyway, things feel like they are going well right now. I can easily find my way to all the places I will probably be frequenting, and my room feels nice and comfortable, if a little blank on the walls, but that’s ok for now. I got to talk to my daddy today, and that always makes me feel better. And I have a hair dryer that works really well. Oh, the little things. :) Anyway, I’ll just have to keep hanging on, little tomato! Xoxo to everyone!
Later, 10 pm
Well, the night spent out of my room didn’t really work out. I was supposed to go meet Tiffany and the party right now, but they changed the location so I don’t know where they are or if I know how to get there, and Monika texted me saying she’s a bit too tired by now, so I wouldn’t have a walking buddy. Definitely wouldn’t want to walk it alone. I don’t know my way around that well, and I don’t own any pepper spray or switchblades for protection in case of random attacks on the street. Yes, I do believe walking around Melbourne at 10 pm alone is not in my game plan for the night. Instead, I will continue reading. I think I have already read about 50 pages of The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle by Haruki Murakami just today (I have been reading for a little while now). I think I might switch to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo now. Would it be weird to read two books at once? I think I could follow along…
Speaking of books, I passed this great looking used bookstore a couple times today. It’s really close, and it looks like they have cool postcards too. It looks like the kind of bookstore where they really take pride in what books they have. Not like that creepy one in Medford. It was so sad. All romance novels and weird sci-fi and all those super long series of bad paperbacks that somehow sell. I’ll have to go into this nice one. I think I might have taken a picture of it and put it on facebook… I can’t remember.
I have one square of dark chocolate left… I cannot decide if I want to eat it. I just had two. And I only have the one Tim Tam. Sighhhh so sad.
I think I may just go to bed now. Man, do I wish I had internet. I was supposed to have it by now, I should have called the company again to remind them to come fix it. I miss everyone a ton. Oh, quick note, there were some cute Australian guys sitting in my kitchen when I went to get dinner. I hope they live on my floor. I didn’t talk to them because they were kind of all conversing, but hopefully I will see them again. I am at the point where I just want to yell, “HI WHAT’S YOUR NAME” at everyone I see here. I need some frieeeends.
Well now that was a boring post. Sorry about that. I am kind of bored tonight, so I am getting my emotions out on this. Well, goodnight world! Xoxo!!!!
